New Program: Media Mindful Family

“Thank you for this opportunity to open my mind about these issues. This program was a great benefit to my family and to my quality of life. It has definitely changed the way I think about media use, and has motivated me to try harder to limit media use in my family.”

Fall 2010 course participant

Media Mindful Family addresses concerns about the dominant role media play in shaping children’s lives. This multi-week discussion group format brings together 8-12 people to explore concerns such as cyberbullying, the challenge of monitoring children’s handheld media use, and the stereotyping of girls and boys in the media. Each session centers on a media-related issue through:

Funding from Oregon Humanities helped us pilot discussion groups in fall 2010. Propelled by overwhelmingly positive feedback from the pilots, we are currently seeking funding to help us finalize the program and reach more families.

What We Do

Media Think offers media literacy courses, training and presentations to groups. Our programs use a collaborative approach and address a range of topics, including: media violence, body image, health, news reporting, over-consumption and the environment, globalization, corporate influence, stereotyping, sexuality, brain development, addiction, and creativity.

Media Think serves as a resource for organizations and individuals with specific interests in media literacy. We provide reference material, online resources, contacts, handouts and other information.

Media Think acts as a catalyst for media change. By making the public more media literate and supporting media reform, we challenge media professionals to "raise the bar” - to be responsible and accountable for what they produce and disseminate.
