Media Literacy Education

The subject of media literacy is all-encompassing and can be overwhelming. We recognize that the media - or, more specifically, our relationship with the media - affects almost every aspect of our lives. That's why Media Think is committed to an ambitious program of education and outreach to meet your specific needs.

What kinds of media literacy education do we offer?

We have age-specific presentations for grades K-12. We have program-specific workshops for professional organizations, colleges and universities. We host discussion groups for parents, families, professionals, faith communities, and workplace gatherings interested in furthering a dialogue about media literacy. Our Crash Course in Media Literacy introduces participants to fundamental techniques of deconstruction and analysis. Topics for discussion have been but are not limited to:

Media and ...

We are developing a salon-style course  that will lead participants through a 6-8 week program of self-taught lessons on a media literacy topic.

For more specific information or to schedule a workshop or presenter, please contact us at 503-432-7333 or info[at]mediathink.org.

Crash Course in Media Literacy

The Crash Course is a fun, lively, hands-on experience in media literacy. In an informal, small group environment, participants examine their relationship to media, share its effect on their lives, and gain tools for critical thinking that challenge existing perceptions of media.

The half-day course focuses on how to deconstruct advertising—the engine driving the media machine—and to read visual messages. Training includes experiential problem solving, thoughtful discussion and analysis of broadcast news, television programs, pop music, Internet, video games, magazines and movies. We explore how images are constructed and how they shape perception, build desire and/or discontent, and create stimulus addiction. We address violence, body image and health issues, over-consumption and environmental issues, media globalization, corporate invasion of the schools, sexuality, brain development, creativity and addiction. The goal of media literacy is to empower us to convert a passive relationship with media into an active and imaginative reclaiming of our stories and our culture.

The course is divided into four parts:

(1) The role of story in defining cultural values, norms and behaviors.

(2) Our media-saturated world, the concept of constructed media messages, and learning the skills of deconstruction.

(3) Mass Media and health, including the influence of media on brain development, physical health and behavior, violence, substance abuse, body image , consumerism and eating.

(4) Constructive personal, interpersonal, and community responses to living in a hyper media-saturated world.
